JOB PURPOSE:

Provide strategy, vision and direction regarding issues and objectives impacting a significant unit of the university or a major university-wide program as part of the student services/affairs organization. Liaise with senior management and cross functional areas and schools to implement this vision and strategy. Manage the work of other employees. The HPS director reports to the associate vice provost (AVP) for health and well-being in the Division of Student Affairs and serves as a member of the AVP’s senior leadership team.

CORE DUTIES*:

  1. Departmental Leadership
    1. Lead and develop a team of health and wellness educators, peer health leaders, and support.
    2. Develop and maintain a vision of wellness culture at Stanford University that is evidence-based and leads to the development and prioritization of program goals. 
    3. Oversee program operations, including the program budget and supervision of staff.
  2. Health and Wellness Education
    1. Direct the development, implementation and evidence-based campus-wide wellness strategic plan.
    2. Oversee outreach efforts related to wellness, such as emotional self-care, nutrition and eating disorders prevention, healthy relationships and sexuality, and robust peer education efforts, possibly to include academic courses.
    3. Develop strategic direction in close alignment with the priorities of Student Affairs.  Prioritize focus on mental health and well-being, as well as diversity and inclusion.
    4. Oversee strategies for fostering student learning and engagement in topics such as emotional self-care, resilience strategies, and general health promotion and wellness education.
    5. Direct engagement with Office of Alcohol Prevention and Education, Health and Human Performance, Counseling and Psychological Services, and other offices within and external to student health services.
  3. Assessment 
    1. Plan and direct assessment of health data, identify departmental needs and priorities, and evaluate effectiveness of interventions and measure learning outcomes
    2. Prepare operational reports and analyses that identify student trends and recommend appropriate programs and solutions. 
  4. Marketing and Outreach
    1. Lead development and implementation of communications strategies related to student well-being and departmental offerings.
  5. Community Collaboration
    1. Meet regularly with the Vaden leadership team, and vital Student Affairs and related student life work groups.
    2. Develop and participate in vital campus collaborations and partnerships. 
    3. Maintain active professional networks.
    4. Promote the services of HPW to the broader Stanford community, identifying barriers to communicating the need for seeking help, creating avenues for increased awareness and utilization, and advising campus leaders on population health-related issues.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in higher education setting preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in public health, health promotion, health policy, psychology health education, social work or related field with 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of full-time supervisory experience of professional staff and a demonstrated record of leading professional development for staff

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people.
  • Understanding of underlying technological needs and requirements.
  • Leadership and expertise in the use of evidence-based health promotion programs/initiatives to analyze health promotion needs of emerging adults, especially college students; experience conducting literature reviews, needs assessments, program evaluations, and creating plans to strategically guide programmatic and budget decisions.
  • Knowledge and application of health promotion, behavior change, population-based theories and models, and experience using environmental management strategies/ecological model
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies, demonstrate commitment to diversity, social justice, and cultural competence.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and the ability to foster cultural, racial, gender equality on a personnel and programmatic level.
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal communication and organizational skills
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends and to adjust work assignments according to programmatic and divisional needs.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines required.

  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
