About the position

A PostDoc position is available in the Process Systems Engineering Group at the Department of Chemical Engineering. The appointment has a duration of 2-3 years with an estimated part of 20% teaching and 80% research.

The position is funded by the European Commission through the MarketPlace Horizon2020 project, which has the objective to provide a European computation market place available to all industry for the computational engineering activities with a focus on materials. An overall description and objectives can be found on its dedicated webpage https://www.the-marketplace-project.eu

Job description

NTNU’s Process Engineering group is heavily involved in the theoretical aspect of the MarketPlace endeavour, with a focus on  the mathematical representation and programmatic representation of models, the formation of model libraries on different levels in the definition space starting from behaviour descriptions of elementary systems to programmed solutions of complex entities. The activities extend to help in solving various interoperability questions working towards the aim of an integrated commercial environment for software and model suppliers as well as translators acting as mediator between problem and solution suppliers.

The group has developed software for the representation of mathematical models, their compilation into various target languages and a ModelComposer tool that allows the generation of complex models by assembling ontology-defined entity models or programmed domain-specific closed solutions such as molecular modelling or computational fluid dynamics, to mention just two. Final stage is a application factory that brings together the instantiated mathematical model with solvers or injects them into a workflow manager.

The project consortium is large and involves the whole range from product-producing industry to software suppliers and designers. The project is thus highly interdisciplinary with a heavy focus on physics and software development.

The group teaches a number of courses : 3rd year process modelling that introduces the students to dynamic systems and their mathematical representation. In the 4th year it is a course in process systems engineering, which extends to model reduction, discrete-event dynamic systems and the task of process identification, mostly regression and observers. In the 5th year it is a advanced simulation course. Finally we are also responsible for the schools students’ laboratory providing the software for interfacing equipment with the computers and to some extent also in the construction of new equipment.

It is estimated that 20% of the time would be spent on these assistant activities.
