Research Program Coordinator

General summary/purpose:

The Research Program Coordinator is responsible for protocol implementation and supporting the Principal Investigator, Susan Carnell in research-related activities. Specifically, the Research Program Coordinator will provide support for the implementation, coordination, and productivity of funded investigations of eating behavior and obesity in infancy, childhood, adolescence and adulthood, including neuroimaging studies.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

Research Recruitment

  • Creates and compiles recruitment materials, initiates subject recruitment strategy, and monitors recruitment goals.
  • Coordinates telephone and screening procedures, and independently administers and scores screening tools.
  • Responds to phone and email inquiries in a timely fashion.
  • Keeps organized records of subject contacts.
  • Keeps records of advertising if indicated.
  • Maintains database of current, potential and declined subjects.
  • Protocol Implementation
  • Coordinates implementation of multiple research studies.
  • Compiles and maintains IRB protocols.
  • Supervises and conducts data collection including administering questionnaires, computer tasks, feeding tests, genetic samples and MRI scans to adults and children.
  • Coordinates scheduling and reminder calls for study visits, transportation for study participants, and preparation of study materials.
  • Supports study operations by ordering supplies, processing travel reimbursements and vendor payment requests, and reviewing and ensuring the accuracy of incoming invoices.
  • Data Management and Analysis
  • After data is obtained, reviews all forms for completeness and accuracy and obtains clarification or corrections if necessary.
  • Maintains subject records in an organized manner.
  • Trains and supervises students or interns on data management.
  • Develops and maintains research databases.
  • Data cleaning and organization, including data reduction.
  • Assists with analyzing results and compiling findings.
  • Double data entry and data checking, including supervision of students and interns completing data entry.
  • Provides orientation to research projects to students and interns.
  • Ensures assignments given to students and interns are completed in timely fashion.
  • Provides guidance students and interns in research related activities.
  • Publication/Presentation/Grant Preparation Support
  • Supports PI in preparing PowerPoint presentations, publications, progress reports and grant applications, including conduction of lit searches and generation of graphs and tables.
  • Meeting Attendance
  • Attend research meetings.
  • Generates to do lists from meetings and timelines for completion of tasks.
  • Attend training sessions as available or required.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline.
  • Some related research experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience in conducting behavioral obesity research in children and families, and/or neuroimaging (particularly fMRI) research, and/or behavioral nutrition research, is highly desirable.
  • Related experience in data collection, and management and/or analysis is preferred.
  • Experience using behavioral or imaging data analysis packages (e.g. SPSS, SPM) is preferred.

  • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
