Job Description
The Macias Lab is seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented research technician. We are a translation cancer research lab with a focus on validating novel therapeutic drug targets in The Department of Pathology and The Duke Cancer Institute. We conduct traditional mechanistic and genetic validation studies of clinically relevant prioritized targets. In addition, we identify, optimize and test new compounds to pharmacologically inhibit our targets which encompasses the initial in silico drug screening process, in vitro live cell imaging phenotypic studies, in vivo pharmacokinietics, drug delivery/formulation studies, to in vivo efficacy studies.
Work Performed
The research technician will perform a variety of translational research tasks both in vitro and in vivo. Tasks will include maintenance of mouse colonies, assist with genetically modified cancer cell line tumor growth and drug efficacy studies. The technician is expected to help with tumor cell inoculation (subcutaneous and orthotropic via survival surgeries), dosing, tumor measurement (caliper or in vivo imaging) and general monitoring of animal wellbeing. Routing lab management task will include ordering and stocking of lab supplies, maintaining laboratory equipment, databases of cell lines/specimens/animals/inventory and perform other related duties and special projects as requested. Routine cell culture maintenance and molecular biology techniques such as protein western blot, gene expression qPCR are expected.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience handling rodents, conducting simple survival surgeries and conducting experiments with tumor cell lines is highly desired for application. Experience with molecular biology and in vitro cell culture techniques are preferred but not required for application with the expectation that the research technician be willing to get trained in these techniques.
Education: Requires a bachelor’s degree in biology, animal sciences or other science related field.
