Instructional Technologist

General Description:

The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University seeks a dynamic and enthusiastic Instructional Technologist to support digital pedagogy and the production of digital learning assets, as well as the academic and professional development needs of Peabody Institute faculty members. Reporting to the Director of Academic Technology and Instructional Design, the Instructional Technologist will possess an in-depth understanding of instructional technology issues related to learning in online, hybrid/blended, and traditional courses, as well as experience using a wide range of hardware and software tools to develop multimedia assets and learning materials. The Instructional Technologist will join a team that works collaboratively to support the teaching and learning mission of the University.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the design, creation, and revision of online learning and training materials, including multimedia assets.
  • Assist instructional designers and multimedia staff in developing supplemental, blended, and fully online courses adhering to organizational standards.
  • Support faculty, students, and staff in the implementation of technology for teaching, learning, and training.
  • Provide instructional technology/design support to projects and personnel within Peabody.
  • Research and evaluate instructional technology resources and their effectiveness.
  • Work with the instructional designers and multimedia staff to pilot technology-based learning materials.
  • Assist with the design and delivery of online, hybrid, and face-to-face instructional technology/design training to staff.
  • Create user and other documentation as needed, including reference and job aids.
  • Support the implementation of sound User Experience Design throughout our various offerings and delivery media.
  • Provide 1st tier LMS user support (Blackboard).
  • Collaborate and consult with other distance education and instructional design and technology staff at Johns Hopkins and other universities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Graduate degree in related discipline a plus.
  • 2 years of experience in the field of instructional/educational technology, including designing, developing, and managing technology-based instructional projects and assets. 
  • Additional education may substitute for experience, and additional experience may substitute required education to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be self-motivated and organized, with the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 
  • Position requires the ability to collect data, create reports and prepare written communication with an attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an academic community.
  • Team player who is able to participate in collaborative instructional development processes and activities.
  • Strong graphic and multimedia design skills. 
  • Ability to produce professional digital media assets, including videos, audio, animation, and screencasts, podcasts based on client needs. Experience with the Adobe suite a plus.
  • Basic web skills including knowledge of HTML/HTML5.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (Blackboard preferred).
  • Understanding of pedagogical issues related to adult learning.
  • Experience with training and staff development.
  • Experience with music-related technologies and software a plus.
  • Experience with active learning space design a plus.
  • The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented team player who is capable of participating in collaborative instructional development processes and activities, is able to work independently, and has strong intellectual and analytical skills.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
