Research Program Coordinator

General Summary/Purpose

Conduct day-to-day research activities in the JHU-Baltimore project offices under the direct supervision of Dr. Joel Gittelsohn.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

The primary role of this position is to coordinate daily research activities for several ongoing projects in Baltimore City and in six Native American communities in New Mexico and Wisconsin (OPREVENT2).

Specifically, in Baltimore, the coordinator will work on research studies in food pantries, a non- profit grocery store, and different small food retailers. Research activities will include designing qualitative and quantitative data collection instruments, preparing content for digital and print materials targeting low-income households in Baltimore City, and communicating with community organizations (i.e. local food pantries, the Maryland Food Bank, the Salvation Army) to ensure successful intervention delivery and data collection.

Additionally, the coordinator will remotely coordinate field staff in New Mexico and Wisconsin to ensure successful intervention delivery and data collection activities as part of a multi-level, multicomponent nutrition and physical activity trial in Native American communities (OPREVENT2). This will include refinement of intervention materials, printing as needed.

The coordinator will conduct statistical analysis for these projects, prepare manuscripts for publication, and assist other team members with their analyses and publications. The coordinator will provide assistance with grant writing, oversee the work of undergraduate and graduate Student Research Assistants, attend scientific meetings, contribute to preparation of IRB reports and amendments as needed, and represent the research team in community meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related discipline.

Some related experience.

Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the  JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Nutrition, Health Policy or related discipline with some related experience.

  • Must be interested and knowledgeable about research studies on obesity prevention, food systems, culturally appropriate nutrition programs and policies.
  • Must have prior experience with supervising undergraduate and graduate students, designing and implementing research projects, and writing grants.
  • Experience working with community organizations in Baltimore City.
  • Experience working in nutrition and physical activity interventions targeting Native North Americans.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Should be able to work independently, detail oriented, outgoing, good communication skills, and organized. Should have experience with qualitative and quantitative data analysis software such as R, Atlas.ti and MAXQDA. Should be knowledgeable about social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
