Research Nurse

General summary/purpose:

This position will be two-fold. Approximately 60% will be devoted to research. The Research Nurse will primarily perform clinical procedures relating to research. The other 40% will be devoted to clinical activities.  These will primarily include skin testing, spirometry and food challenges.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

The Research Nurse will primarily perform clinical procedures relating to research which include:

  • Performs clinical procedures include skin testing, spirometry and food challenges.
  • Monitors Subject’s clinical course through the clinical trial.
  • This person will assist the Program Coordinator in data collection/data entry/document maintenance.
  • Performs research interviews for clinical trials.
  • Ensures collection of pertinent data.
  • Records & documents protocol deviations.
  • Completes case report forms.
  • Enters research data.
  • Assists Program Coordinator in preparation of IRB renewals and amendments.
  • This position will also assist in recruiting subjects for various clinical trials, ensures initial & ongoing eligibility of subjects for research studies, and collaborates in the development of recruitment strategies to ensure patient accrual within protocol timeframes.
  • Quality Assurance and Communication and will require that he/she participates in sponsor/internal audits and monitoring activities.
  • Attend team meetings to review study process.
  • Communicates effectively with members of the health care team and research team.
  • Communicates effectively with subject and family of active and prospective study participants.
  • The Clinical Nurse position will be supervised by the clinical staff (ie: physicians and/or nurse practitioners) in the Pediatric Allergy Clinic.
  • The Clinical Nurse will primarily perform clinical procedures which include performing skin testing, spirometry and food challenges.
  • Will also be responsible to identify needs and incorporates information from other health care disciplines into clinical practice.
  • Collaborates with health care team to coordinate and facilitate clinical care, evaluates patient, responses to interventions.
  • Proposes alternative methods to meet individual patient need, and assists clinical team with scheduling food challenges.

Minimum qualifications:

Must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline preferred.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in Nursing highly desired. 
  • Minimum experience in research a plus.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Able to perform double blind, placebo-controlled food challenges with food allergic subjects in a safe manner.
  • Able to perform and interpret skin tests and spiromtery.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
