Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow in GIS study of mobilities on the Belt and Road in the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (HKIHSS) (Ref.: 494362) (to commence on September 1, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter for two years)

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree preferably in Human Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Religious Studies, History or a related discipline, with practical experience in Geographic Information System (GIS) and big-data analytics as well as an understanding on their applications to research in the humanities/social sciences.

The appointee will work for the Collaborative Research Grant Project “Infrastructures of Faith: Religious Mobility on the Belt and Road” (C7052-18GF), funded by the Research Grant Council of Hong Kong SAR, under the advice of Dr. David A. Palmer (Project Coordinator, HKIHSS/ Department of Sociology) and Dr. Junxi Qian (Department of Geography).  The appointee will be responsible for using geo-tagged and locational data in websites, social media and other online platforms to develop macro-level mapping of mobilities of religious people, organizations and activities along the Belt and Road, and undertake quantitative and qualitative analyses of such mobilities and networks.  The appointee is expected to produce visualizations accessible to the public, assist the development of the project website, and (co)author research articles.
