The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies (SHAPS) is at the forefront of teaching and research in the humanities in Australia. We have a team of dedicated academic and professional staff in the disciplines of History, Philosophy, Classics and Archaeology, History and Philosophy of Science, Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and the Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation. The Classics and Archaeology program in particular offers a wide range of subjects in its ‘Ancient World Studies’ major on such topics as the archaeology of Egypt and the ancient Aegean, Mediterranean, Near East and Levant; ancient languages (Greek, Latin, Egyptian, Syriac, and Akkadian); Greek and Roman history; and ancient literature in translation.

The Faculty welcomes applications from archaeology specialists to fill the role of Lecturer in Classical Greek Archaeology (which can include Hellenistic), to work within the Classics and Archaeology program and to complement its strengths as set out above. The successful applicant will be expected to research, teach and administer at a level commensurate with the level of the position (Level B). The person must have demonstrated field and practical skills in Classical Greek archaeology; potential to achieve a high level of research performance through the steady production of refereed publications in Classical Greek archaeology; and potential to attain academic promotion. The successful applicant will also be able to demonstrate significant grant-winning potential in these fields.

The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching to a high standard at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The person will be expected to teach subjects in Greek archaeology as well as practical archaeology, and contribute to and develop other subjects as appropriate. Supervision of research higher degree (MA and PhD) students is also a requirement. The successful candidate will have a proven capability to make a significant contribution to research and engagement in Ancient World Studies, and will aspire to cultivate research links and networks with other groups on campus, as well as with external networks/partners nationally and internationally. The person will also take on administrative tasks associated with the appointment.
