Based in the Ultrasonics and Non-destructive Testing research group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol you will undertake internationally-leading research as part of an EPSRC funded Programme Grant on Pervasive sensing in buried pipes. The work is motivated by the drive to inspect our underground water, gas and sewerage networks. Currently billions of pounds are wasted due to failure of this network and the resulting disruptions. The aim of the project is use swarms of autonomous robots for this inspection task and the work at the University of Bristol will focus on the development of the ultrasonic sensors. These sensors will be used of a variety of tasks including the inspection of the condition of the pipe itself.

The University of Bristol is the project lead of the Sensors workpackage, in which the researcher will perform most of the research. You must have a first degree in Engineering, or a Physical Sciences subject, and a PhD/EngD that demonstrates your ability to apply rigorous mathematical methods to solve practical problems. In addition, you should have experience in signal processing, numerical simulation, ultrasonics and non-destructive testing. The work will involve numerical simulations, laboratory-scale ultrasonic experiments and field trials. You will be part of a vibrant research team and work with experts in robotics, navigation and artificial intelligence. You will be expected to present your work at regular project review meetings and become involved in the integration of the sensors with the other components of the robots.

This post is being offered on a full time, with funding up to 24/02/2022, starting as soon as possible.
