Applications are invited for a three-year Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the School of Mathematics at the University of Bristol. The positions are available from 1 September 2019 for up to 3 years, with flexible start date. The appointment will be on Research Grade I.
This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside Professor Jens Marklof on the cutting-edge research project “Wave transport in low-density matter, Siegel theta functions, and homogeneous flows.”
The project is supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the UK’s national research agency in Mathematical Sciences, which funds two three-year post-doctoral positions as well as a significant travel, visitor and outreach budget. The research programme is organised in two streams, one covering aspects of dynamical systems and number theory, the other mathematical analysis, in particular PDE, kinetic theory and semiclassical/microlocal analysis.
The advertised position is aligned with the latter research stream; a second vacancy for a “Research Associate in Number Theory and Dynamical Systems” is advertised separately. Both streams are strongly interrelated, and a key objective of the project is to build a team that can transfer knowledge and techniques between the relevant research areas.
The project addresses the fundamental challenge of understanding wave transport in a given medium. The focus will be on the rigorous mathematical derivation of transport equations from the underlying fundamental laws of physics, and to thus describe effects on scales which are several orders of magnitude above the length scale given by the fine structure of the medium. The exciting aspect of the proposed research is that some of the transport processes we seek to derive are new and will expose subtle corrections to classical results in kinetic theory.
