Role Description

Cranfield Soil and Agrifood Institute (CSAFI) is highly dependent on a strong and dynamic bioinformatics capability to deliver its globally influential research in soil, plant and microbial sciences. Following recent research funding successes, and in anticipation of the launch of our Bioinformatics L7 Apprenticeship Scheme as part of Cranfield Masterships® Programme, we seek to appoint an additional Lecturer in Bioinformatics.

You will join a team of inter-disciplinary bioinformaticians, taking a leading role in developing and delivering various research activities, and will contribute to teaching in our long-established and award-winning Applied Bioinformatics MSc course and the new Mastership®.

The Bioinformatics Group at Cranfield is entirely computer-based and develops and applies computational methods to the unravelling of complex biological systems. We run and administer an in-house high-performance-computing facility for NGS data analysis, including de novo assembly, RNA-Seq, functional annotation and genotyping. We also have a long track record in software development including standalone and Web applications, as well as data science and machine learning. We work closely with colleagues in the Environment and Agrifood Theme, applying our expertise in bioinformatics to help solve a range of biological challenges funded by UKRI, EU and through direct industry funding.

You will have obtained a PhD in bioinformatics, or other computational biology related discipline, and will have proven research and teaching experience. You will have a strong programming background (Java, C++, Python and/or Perl) and a track record in publishing and submitting research proposals.

If you have ambition to build your own reputation through research, an impressive publications record and a great student teaching approach, then we would like to hear from you.

For an informal discussion regarding this position, please contact Dr Fady Mohareb, Senior Lecturer in Bioinformatics via f.mohareb@cranfield.ac.uk

We aim to foster a working, learning and teaching environment rich in creativity and innovation which can help improve our competitive edge.  Our people are our most valuable resource and everyone has a role to play in shaping the future of our University, developing our learners, and transforming the businesses we work with.
