Karolinska Institutet, NVS

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2018 of 490 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division

The Division of Neurogeriatrics consits of 16 research groups and approximately 90 employees whereof approximately 20 are PhD students. Our research is focused on Alzheimer´s disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative diseases, and is strongly oriented towards translating findings from basic research into clinical practice.

Research group

The position is placed in the group of Jaan-Olle Andressoo and it is located in campus Flemingsberg. The laboratory’s goal is to develop novel therapeutic approaches by creating tools, which allow increasing endogenous gene expression. Current pharmacopoeia enables to enhance function of only few hundred human proteins. An ability to enhance the function of any gene or pathway of interest would likely be very useful. Recently we have made great progress in this direction by showing that it is possible to use CRE-FLEX and CRISPR-Cas9 systems to conditionally upregulate endogenous gene expression limited to naturally expressing cells. We are now looking for 1-2 post-doctoral colleagues who can help to analyze new knock-in mouse models, where we can study upregulation of endogenous genes on AD outcome. We will also use AAV delivery of CRE and various CRISPR-Cas systems to upregulate endogenous gene expression, preceded by verification of the CRISPR system in appropriate cell-lines. The position/positions are for one year with possibility of extension.

Duties

A successful candidate will independently analyze how developmental or adult onset increase in genetically modified APP expression influences AD pathology and how beta-amyloid miss-folding spreads in adult brain. In parallel, the postdoctoral fellow will analyze how enhancing other genes modulates AD phenotypes using appropriate CRE lines. The postdoctoral fellow will also create RNA libraries for RNA-SEQ analysis from various mouse models and in collaboration from C. elegans samples.

Entry requirements

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

The Jaan-Olle Andressoo laboratory is looking for a postdoctor with the following qualifications: A Ph.D. in neuroscience or similar, preferably with good knowledge in neurodegenerative diseases. He/she should also have previous thorough theoretical and practical experience in animal experimentation, including behavioral studies and knowledge of crossing different genetically modified mouse lines, cell culture and histological studies. Experience in molecular biology such as protein quantification techniques is a strong merit.

A successful applicant should also have:

  • high personal drive and motivation
  • strong collaborative attitude
  • good organizing skills
  • innovative thinking and a high level of independence

Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Application process

An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
