Division

The department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) is divided into 5 divisions. The department has around 400 employes and over 200 registered PhD students. At the Division of Psychology, we're conducting research at the intersection between psychology and biomedicine at Karolinska Institutet and the Karolinska University Hospital. Currently, there are fifteen different research groups at the divsion.

We welcome applications for a Postdoc position in social and affective cognitive neuroscience in the research group headed by Dr. Andreas Olsson. The overarching goal of our research is to understand the mechanisms of emotional learning and regulation in social situations. In particular, we study the learning and regulation of fear and other aversions and how these processes interact with social cognition and decision-making to produce behavior. For more info about our research, and recent publications, please see our web-site: www.emotionlab.se

The Olsson research group consists of one senior researcher, four post-docs, four PhD students, a lab-manager and several research assistants. The group’s lab facilities include three interconnected testing rooms fully equipped for behavioral and psychophysiological measures (wireless BIOPAC, SMI eye-trackers), and virtual reality (VR). The group has full access to the imaging center which includes several research dedicated MR scanner (e.g. a 3T GE scanner). We are a member of a larger network of researchers with interest in cognitive and computational neuroscience, and expertise in fMRI, PET, MEG, TMS, and computational approaches. The Swedish National center for MEG (NatMEG) is located adjacent to our lab facilities. We collaborate with several research groups in Europe and the United States.

Duties

The successful candidate will be a part of a productive and dynamic research environment and work on projects investigating emotional learning and social cognition with a focus on fMRI. You will be involved in the design and implementation of experiments, as well as the analysis and dissemination of the results at conferences and in scientific journals. The position provides an excellent opportunity for transition to career independence, including faculty supervision and an individual development plan to support training goals. The successful candidate will also serve as a resource to more junior lab members by sharing his/her knowledge. You will have the opportunity to supervise and train students and research assistants.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a PhD in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, engineering, or a related field with a promising publication record. The candidate should have a strong quantitative background, and have experience of design, implementation and analysis of behavioral and fMRI experiments. We are particularly looking for someone with strong computational programming skills, including experience with R, Python, Matlab, etc. Strengths in statistical knowledge, and experience of advanced aspects of neuroimaging data analysis, including machine learning and multivariate analysis, are especially desirable. Experience with learning theory and conditioning experiments is preferred. The ability to work well within a team and display high interpersonal skills, is also important, because a large part of the research will be carried out in cooperation with other lab members. Excellent oral and written English language skills are required.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

Application process

An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
