CO PET Technologist

Under general supervision employee will demonstrate the ability to provide quality patient care and perform procedures on patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric. Perform PET/CT, PET, and SPECT procedures as defined by departmental protocol. Assists in the training of student technologist. Demonstrate continuous self-improvement, make effective contributions to the department/division and adhere to departmental policies and procedures.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Radiopharmaceutical Management

Verifies quality and quantity of appropriate radiopharmaceutical. Accurately calculates and measures appropriate activity of radiopharmaceutical with dose calibrator.  Always calculates appropriate application of radioactive materials; determines accurate volume or unity necessary to deliver the prescribed radioactive dose.  Always records the appropriate radiopharmaceutical information on a permanent departmental record.          

Diagnostic Procedures

Performs all diagnostic PET and nuclear medicine procedures.    Consistently selects appropriate equipment and protocol required for patient’s examination with regard to patient’s age, development, and study requested according to established guidelines. Routinely maneuvers patient into optimal position(s) according to established guidelines. Consistently demonstrates appropriate knowledge of normal and abnormal anatomy by obtaining complete and accurate series of diagnostic and high quality images within an agreed upon time frame and as per written protocol.  Routinely and accurately obtains reproducible measurements needed per protocol using established manual or computerized methods. Consistently provides interpreting physicians with preliminary findings and completed results in a timely fashion.

Quality Control

Ensures that equipment is running at its optimum peak. Consistently and accurately performs quality control on imaging and monitoring equipment as prescribed in written policies and procedures. Consistently monitors any equipment malfunction or abnormality and performs corrective actions if possible.

Qualifications:

Associate's degree or Equivalent. 1 year of experience.  Nuclear Medicine Technologist license by the Maryland Board of Physicians. ARRT or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board certified with current registration. CPR certification.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Requires knowledge of radiopharmaceuticals and a thorough knowledge of nuclear medicine procedures. Requires a general knowledge of procedures and equipment used in Nuclear Medicine diagnostic procedures.   Moderate analytical ability required to calculate and prepare appropriate dosages of radio pharmaceuticals, analyze test results, and perform quality assurance tests. Work, however, is performed under physician supervision. Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact with medical staff, patients, visitors, and other hospital employees.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
