Head of the School of Fashion
Manchester
Competitive (plus an additional uplift for the Head of Tenure)
Ref: 1666

Manchester is one of the most extensive higher education centres in Europe and one of the most popular cities for students in the UK. We are at the heart of it, delivering cutting-edge skills to people from 120 countries – 94% of whom go into work or further study within six months of graduating. Since 2006, we have invested £350 million into our exceptional campus to deliver our vision of being the best modern university, and we continue to achieve and innovate every day.

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is a large multidisciplinary community embracing Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Manchester School of Art. With around 10,000 students, the Faculty has a portfolio of quality provision in both Education and Research, with some areas of world-leading performance.

Our new School of Fashion is a multi-disciplinary team bringing together fashion expertise and talent from across the University, Manchester and the world. We are an international hub that connects education, research and enterprise to inspire the next generation of industry leaders. Home to a community of fashion designers, buyers, merchandisers, managers, researchers, product developers and marketers, our fashion courses cover the breadth of the industry from fashion design, to management, business and product development.

At the School of Fashion, we promote a culture that empowers both staff and students to create their own opportunities by taking advantage of our cutting-edge resources and unrivalled connections. We deliver research projects, consultancy and enterprise focusing on innovation, sustainability and impact. Our facilities are of industry standard, our academics are internationally connected, and our research is pioneering. Inherently proud of our Mancunian roots, we embrace our city, its heritage, culture and achievements.

The Role:
Reporting to the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor and working closely with other senior colleagues, you will be responsible for developing a vision for the School of Fashion, building upon existing heritage and strengths to raise the profile of Fashion at Manchester Met as an internationally recognised strength. You will provide effective academic leadership and strategic direction for the School, demonstrating a continually high-level research profile and professional and academic standing.

This is a rotational role; after four years, you will either continue leading the department forward or move in to a professorial leadership role depending on your ambitions and your performance in the Head of School role.

Ideal Candidate:
You will be an experienced academic with a strong research and teaching track record. Personally, you will bring a positive, inclusive, and collegial leadership style coupled with strong strategic vision: much hinges on your ability to scan the horizon and to come up with innovative responses.  You will hold a doctoral level qualification or equivalent and will have a strong track record of providing academic leadership.
