About the position

A PhD position is available in the lab of Dr. Valentyn Oksenych, Group Leader at IKOM, whose research group focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms of B lymphocyte development, DNA repair, and tumorigenesis. Read more here: https://www.ntnu.edu/employees/valentyn.oksenych

The candidate will work on a project deciphering role of DNA damage response factors in B lymphocyte development, with specific focus on the V(D)J recombination. The work will be to characterize relevant mouse models, generate and characterize required lymphoid cell lines, and develop new methodologies in this research field. The period of employment for the position is 3 years, preferably starting as early as possible, and before October 2019.

We seek a colleague with preferred experience in mouse models, lymphocyte development, and/or neurodevelopment. You should be able to present your data by writing and publishing in scientific journals, and by presenting at meetings. Thus, oral and written competence of the English language is a must.

We are about ten people at different career levels and from different countries that want to do creative and excellent research. We are looking forward to bringing in an excited candidate that will complement our current strengths, who can work independently, participate and contribute to the research of others in the group.

Job description

  • Work with mice: colony maintenance, including genotyping
  • Flow cytometry analysis of lymphocytes at different developmental stages
  • Generation of knockout cell lines (vAbl, CH12F3)
  • Development of new methodology to characterize lymphocyte maturation

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background  or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Requirements:

  • MSc degree or equivalent education within molecular medicine, biotechnology, or related field
  • A strong academic record with a weighted average grade B or higher (Norwegian system)
  • Proficiency in oral and written English

Emphasis will also be placed on experience with the following areas: 

  • Flow cytometry analysis of primary cells isolated from tissue
  • In vivo mouse models
  • Imaging
  • Neurodevelopment

We offer

The candidate will have access to the excellent infrastructure and laboratory facilities at the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (https://www.ntnu.no/ikom). The laboratories have state of the art imaging instruments and access to local core facilities in bioinformatics, genomics, and proteomics (http://www.ntnu.edu/dmf/core-facilities).

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme.

The master's degree must be completed with a grade of B or better, admission to the PhD programme must take place no later than 3 months after commencement, and progress in the scheduled PhD programme must be maintained. 

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time. Changes in the place of work and the work description or duties may occur.
