University of Manchester

Vice-President for Social Responsibility

The University of Manchester is a large, research-intensive, Russell Group university that has a positive and significant impact on society. Three core goals underpin our ambition to be one of the world’s leading higher education institutions by 2020: world-class research, outstanding learning and student experience, and social responsibility. We conduct ground-breaking research into some of the world’s biggest challenges and are committed to transforming the well-being of the communities we serve. Our 40,000 students benefit from tuition that is innovative, academically rigorous, and geared towards their future employability.

The University is seeking to appoint a Vice-President for Social Responsibility to succeed Professor James Thompson, who will step down this year. Reporting directly to the President and Vice-Chancellor, the new Vice-President will lead on a broad, cross-cutting portfolio that focuses on the University’s role as a civic institution and on the social, economic, environmental and cultural benefits it brings to the world. This includes research with impact, responsible graduates, community engagement, environmental sustainability, and our approach to equality, diversity and inclusion. He or she will also have responsibility for our cultural institutions, including the Whitworth, Manchester Museum, and Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre.

The appointed candidate will bring a demonstrably successful track record of leadership and management in high-performing institutions, plus a broad-based understanding of current affairs and the interaction between social responsibility and higher education. He or she will also have a clear vision for the University’s social responsibility and cultural agendas, and a personal track record of research and scholarship.
