The University of Melbourne wishes to appoint a new Head of the Melbourne Dental School, following the announcement that Professor Mike Morgan will step down from this role from early 2020.

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at The University of Melbourne is Australia’s pre-eminent medical, health sciences and biomedical faculty. It is the country’s overall leader in clinical, pre-clinical and health sciences and was ranked 9th globally in 2019 by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The Faculty’s new strategic plan Beyond 2018 (http://mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/beyond2018) sets out the ambition to change the world of health and healthcare and ensure that the Faculty cements its position as Australia’s leading health and biomedical faculty.

The Melbourne Dental School (MDS) is one of 6 schools in the Faculty. It is Australia’s leading Dental School and has also attracted more research funding than any other dental school in the country. The MDS has a major commitment to undergraduate dental education and the training of dental therapists and dental hygienists. It is at the forefront of graduate dental education and has Australia’s largest postgraduate program. The School also offers a variety of exciting and valuable continuing professional development programs for dental practitioners. The diverse range of Australian and international students from many social and ethnic backgrounds provides a stimulating intellectual environment which enhances the learning experience for all students at the School.

As a member of the Faculty’s senior executive team, it will be essential that the new Head of School not only possesses an excellent reputation in research and teaching but also foster innovative research and sound teaching and learning pedagogy. The appointee will be an astute manager and strategic leader, who can lead a complex organisation with view to maintaining and enhancing the School’s position of eminence in Australia and internationally. He/she will be an excellent relationship-builder who engages well with stakeholders both internal and external to the University with a focus on supporting the Faculty’s strategic plan.
