Summer Intensive Academic Communications Instructor, Washington DC

General Summary/Purpose:

The Part-time Summer Intensive Academic Communication instructor will provide enthusiastic instruction for two sections of an intensive speaking and pronunciation-focused course at the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School. The course will run from July 25 to August 12 at our Baltimore campus and from July 29 to August 14 at our D.C. campus. The main objective for this course is to orient students to communication norms in the American classroom: idioms, email conventions, discussion and presentation skills. The instructor will use an established curriculum and lesson plans to create an enjoyable learning environment for newly arrived international graduate students. The instructor will participate in an online orientation session prior to arriving on campus with a date TBD. Instructors will teach two sections in the morning or afternoon. Each 18-to-25 student section meets 10 times for 1.5 hours per class, and case competitions will take place for all sections on the final day. There will be approximately 15-to-20 hours of planning/grading per section.

Note: Multiple positions available.

The Summer Intensive Program at Carey was developed as a total immersion experience for our incoming international students. All classes will be taught on-site at the Baltimore Harbor East and Washington, D.C. Carey campuses. Interviews may be virtual or on-site. Carey does not provide housing or cover expenses for summer staff.

The payment will be $6100 for new instructors and $6500 for returning instructors.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach assigned sections of Academic Communication and lead four portfolio development sessions.
  • Ensure students get clear and detailed feedback on their performance and participation.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and scholastic records of students on Blackboard.
  • Serve as a friendly and knowledgeable cultural and linguistic guide to students.
  • Participate in regular communication with the Summer Intensive staff and program manager.
  • Attend an online orientation session, welcome day and final case competition.
  • Participate in program meetings.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism as a representative of the school.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

Bachelor’s degree required.

2 or more years’ experience teaching communicative speaking classes to advanced international students or other related experience required.
Ability to lead an effective and dynamic class with skill and patience.

Preferred Qualifications:

MA/MEd TESOL or closely related field preferred. Experience in higher education, especially in a business school, or corporate setting preferred.

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

TESL/TEFL certification desirable.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
