Wave Energy Research Centre

  • Outstanding opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary research centre based in Albany
  • Two year | full time | fixed term appointment based
  • Level B position: $98,526.00 - $116,792.00 per annum

The University of Western Australia (UWA) has an international reputation for excellence and enterprise and has been rated as one of the best comprehensive universities in Australia.  It is one of the country’s leading research institutions and the only Western Australian member of the prestigious Australian “Group of Eight” research intensive universities.

About the work area

The Wave Energy Research Centre (WERC) is a newly established research centre within the University of Western Australia (UWA), funded by the State Government.

WERC is located at UWA’s campus at Albany in southern Western Australia. The centre includes a number of full time research staff integrated within the UWA Albany campus, undertaking research activities in oceanography, geotechnical engineering and hydrodynamics and also working closely with a group of academic staff at UWA’s campus in Perth.

The main objective of WERC is to conduct research to advance the wave energy industry and to support and enable the development, deployment and operation of wave energy converters at Torbay, west of Albany. WERC is a member of the Australian Ocean Energy Group that strengthens collaboration and accelerates innovation across sectors.

Associated with the Ocean Graduate School, administered within the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Science at the University of Western Australia, WERC will also have strong connections with the multidisciplinary UWA Ocean Institute and will aim to foster world-leading research in the area of offshore renewables so as to establish UWA as a global international hub for both academia and industry.

The role

We are seeking a Research Fellow to work with the Chief Investigators (CIs) to conduct high quality and high impact research that contributes to achieving the centres objectives, and assist with research student training.

The role responsibilities include conducting high quality research in hydrodynamic modelling of wave energy devices, developing advanced theoretical and computational models of wave energy devices, planning and interpreting model scale laboratory experiments and development of design tools or predictive models for estimating extreme loads. The Research Fellow will also be responsible for supervision and assisting with training of research students.

To be considered for this position you will need to demonstrate:

  • A PhD (or nearly completed) in a discipline relevant to hydrodynamics, or equivalent experience in industry practice
  • Relevant research experience or advanced engineering practice at an appropriate level in hydrodynamics and computational fluid dynamics (additional experience in model scale laboratory testing and analysis of wave energy devices would be beneficial, but is not necessary)
  • Experience in offshore geotechnics would be beneficial, but is not necessary
  • Experience in preparing manuscripts for publication and giving presentations at conferences
  • Experience in supervising and training postgraduate or undergraduate research students
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative and work productively as part of a team
  • Commitment to service roles in the workplace
  • Commitment to inclusivity and diversity in the workplace

The successful candidate will be based in the coastal town of Albany, 450km south of Perth, as part of the UWA Albany Centre within the Great Southern Marine Research Facility. Albany is the headquarters to operations and fieldwork for WERC and hosts regular team retreats of all WERC researchers.

Applicants must have the ability to work remotely and autonomously, and a strong sense of leadership.
