Ours is an extraordinary educational environment and because we specialise in identifying and developing individual potential, you can be confident you'll receive all the help and encouragement you need to build a rewarding career with lots of opportunities to progress.

Our combined higher and further education offering is spread over campuses in Derby, Buxton, Leek and Chesterfield and we have some of the best university facilities in the UK, investing more than £200 million in facilities in the last 10 years. We are now among the top 20 universities in the UK for teaching quality and have risen six places overall in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide league table to joint 13th in the country for teaching quality; an excellent achievement and a reflection of our Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Gold Award. We are ranked as one of the UK’s top 30 universities in The Guardian’s University Guide for 2019 and among the world’s top 250 modern universities in the Times Higher Education Young University rankings, and we were recently presented with the Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year Award at the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards (THELMAs).

We remain in the top 10 universities for the highest number of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships being delivered. Our research is wide-ranging and internationally recognised, and our research teams are working on projects that are:

  • helping businesses become more efficient and sustainable;
  • improving the lives of young people;
  • predicting and reducing climate change;
  • helping to conserve our local heritage and environment;
  • developing new technologies, such as artificial intelligence;
  • supporting the transformation of health and social care services;
  • making a significant contribution to national and international policy agendas.

The Role
We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic new Head for the Business and Management discipline in the Derby Business School, to continue the successful leadership of Dr Judith Gill, who will be retiring this summer.

Derby Business School is based within the College of Business, Law and Social Science at the University of Derby, and has a clear vision to be internationally recognised as one of the UK leading Business Schools for Applied Real World Learning and Impact. The Business School is organised around four subject disciplines: Business and Management, Marketing and Operations, Economics and International Business, and Accounting. We work very closely with professional bodies such as CMI, CIM, CIPD, CILT, CIPS, ACCA and CIMA, to ensure our courses and research remain relevant and up-to-date.

This post is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and success of the Business and Management Discipline, as well as the wider School and College by working closely with colleagues to ensure that our corporate and strategic aims are met. You will have overall responsibility for the line management of specific staff in the discipline area, which also incorporates Strategic and Risk Management, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, and HRM and Leadership, alongside general Business and Management.

Research within the College is currently organised around two research centres, the Centre for Business Improvement, and the Centre for Supply Chain Improvement. The Centre for Business Improvement is led by Professor Carley Foster and it draws upon the academic expertise of staff from across the Business School and includes internationally recognised researchers, doctoral students and visiting scholars. Its aim is to help improve business performance and productivity through applied multi-disciplinary research in areas such as Sustainable Business and the Green Economy, Enterprise Evaluation and Applied Economics, and Responsible Customer Engagement.

The Centre for Supply Chain Improvement is led by Professor Jose Arturo Garza-Reyes and its work addresses some of most critical challenges that organisations are currently facing in the design, management and improvement of their supply chains and internal operations. The Centre has commanding research expertise in Business and Process Excellence, Systematic Innovation, Lean Six Sigma, Green Lean, Sustainable, Green and Circular Operations and Supply Chains, Quality Management, Cost and System Optimisation, System Modelling and Simulation, and Artificial Intelligence.

In addition, staff from across the School work very closely with Industry on a range of knowledge transfer activities, including the ENSCITE European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) project where we have closely engaged with over 140 SMEs in the D2N2 region in the past two years to assist them to identify new markets, innovate new marketing channels, improve productivity and growth, and launch new products and services.
