The University of Sussex is one of the UK’s foremost higher education institutions. We are consistently ranked amongst the top 30 universities in the UK. The University of Sussex Business School is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2019, a period that has seen a significant growth in academic staff and students in the School.

With over 50 years of experience, SPRU is internationally recognised as a leading centre of research on science, technology and innovation policy. Founded in 1966 by Christopher Freeman, a pioneer of what is now known as innovation studies, SPRU was one of the first interdisciplinary research centres in the field of science and technology policy and management.

SPRU and the Business School are seeking to appoint a Professor of Innovation Management as the new RM Phillips Freeman Chair, sponsored by a donation of the RM Phillips Charitable Foundation and established in collaboration with the Freeman Trust. The position of the Chair comes with the opportunity to develop a programme of research and to appoint a Research Fellow/s with 5 years’ worth of funding as well as an allowance for research costs.

We are keen to appoint someone interested in providing new intellectual insight into how innovation can play a transformative role in the economy and society, and contribute to and develop new modules in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programmes, particularly in the areas of innovation management and project management, in SPRU and across the Business School.

We are seeking an academic with the ability to engage with a variety of academic, policy and business audiences and agendas, to establish a network of business actors, involving them in teaching and research activity. The successful candidate will have a commitment to interdisciplinary research and to integrating qualitative and quantitative research methods, and it would be an advantage to have an interest in industrial strategy and in developing research in emerging areas of innovation management, including Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Digital Innovation, and Sustainable Innovation.
