An exciting opportunity has arisen within the University of Bristol’s IT Services Division for an experienced Network Engineer. The successful candidate will join the Network Team to assist in maintaining and developing the edge wired and wireless networks.

The Role:

Lifecycle management of switches - configuration and replacement of approximately 230 switches per year. This is also an opportunity to improve the topology of the network, arranging installation of additional fibre and cabling to improve the network.

2nd line user support via ticket management system – we receive hundreds of incidents per year from Staff and Students that need troubleshooting by the Network Team, these incidents need to be prioritised and actioned appropriately. You will take a lead in troubleshooting users’ wireless issues.

Responding to network outages across the university network which comprises 3000+ APs, 1600+ Switches, 30+ Distribution Routers.

An important aspect of the role is assisting senior colleagues, who are responsible for the wireless network, by undertaking wireless surveys and, with guidance, designing simple installations.

The University is constantly expanding, and new network equipment is regularly installed. The role holder will be involved in preparing equipment lists for new/refurbished buildings, obtaining quotes, and installing equipment during the commissioning phases of the building project.

The University is geographically dispersed and getting to remote locations is an essential part of the role. A full and clean driving license is essential.

The Candidate:

The successful candidate should have existing skills with Cisco wired and wireless equipment and will be adaptable to work with other vendors’ equipment. You will be responsible for normal operational running, administering, troubleshooting and maintenance of all parts of the university edge network.

You should be highly motivated and enthusiastic about working in a fast paced and constantly changing environment. You will need to be able to proactively manage your workload and prioritise work with often conflicting demands. You will need to show a high level of adaptability, and an aptitude for getting to grips with new technologies quickly.

You will have a good knowledge of troubleshooting wired and wireless technologies in a complex environment, making suitable recommendations to resolve issues.

The role involves working closely with technical peers (within IT Services and outside the University) as well as with non-technical users. An ability to communicate clearly to people at all levels in the business is essential.

The role holder will be required to work in a number of areas which normal university staff do not access, such as plant rooms, comms rooms, switch rooms, building sites etc. You must have a thorough and responsible attitude to the Health and Safety of yourself and other users of these areas.
