General summary/purpose:

This individual will interact with investigators, collaborators, and patients in clinical research studies and will learn to conduct chemosensory testing (smell and taste) and assessments of feeding behavior and cognitive functioning. This individual will recruit participants, administer routine olfactory and taste tests to patients, facilitate patient set up with research protocol, collect and record data, and perform statistical analyses. They will have the opportunity to learn a range of skills including chemosensory testing, neuropsychological assessment, electrophysiology, structural neuroimaging, and statistical analysis.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Interact with clinicians and other gatekeepers to access patient populations; recruit and schedule research participants; administer and score routine olfactory and taste tests.
  • Collect and record data.
  • Maintain paper files and computerized databases.
  • Participate in weekly research group meetings.
  • Monitor and maintain supply of research materials and order as needed
  • Meet regularly with Principal Investigator to review data accuracy and overall study progress.
  • Assist in preparation and management of JHM-IRB communications.
  • Analyze data using SPSS statistical analysis software.
  • May schedule and conduct research MRI scans.
  • Although not an essential job function, experience with statistical analysis, analysis of electrophysiology data or functional neuroimaging is a plus.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in human subjects research required.
  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, neuroscience, or a closely related discipline preferred.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to carry out protocols with human volunteers, some of whom will be ill and/or have psychiatric disorders.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Hard-working, self-motivated, highly-organized, detail- oriented, and precise.
  • Must have excellent time management skills and work well in a team setting.
  • Must have excellent personal computer skills and knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Must have familiarity with SPSS or other statistical software.

Machines and/or equipment used on the job:

  • Personal computer, study laptop, telephone, printer/copier/scanner/fax machine, olfactometer equipment.

Degree of independent action performed on the job:  

  • Works with minimal supervision most days.

Internal and external contacts required as part of the job:  

  • Internal contacts include School of Medicine faculty, fellows and staff on the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Bayview campuses.
  • The primary office will be on the Johns Hopkins Hospital east Baltimore campus. External contacts include physicians and health services agencies in the wider community study (i.e., FM Kirby Center at KKI), and study participants.

Starting Salary Range: $14.00 - $19.25 (commensurate with experience)

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
