LECTURERComparative Media Studies/Writing-Writing and Communication Center (WCC) (part-time (50%) lecturer for AY2019-2020.  Will help clients with any writing or speaking/oral presentation issues including understanding the rhetorical situation; identifying and analyzing the needs and expectations of various audiences and tailoring documents and speeches to them; understanding genre conventions and expectations; creating effective organization; using persuasive argument strategies; employing critical thinking; creating a more convincing and effective style; practicing speeches for classroom assignments, job talks, and conference presentations; understanding visual rhetoric; improving slide design; writing effective proposals (e.g., grant proposals, book proposals, etc.); crafting articles for publication; writing job materials (e.g., CVs, resumes, application essays, letters); explaining grammar rules and conventions, particularly for second language learners; turning dissertations into first books; and overcoming writers’ block.  

Founded in 1982, the WCC is a teaching institution, not an editing or proofreading service. It is staffed fully by professionals who work one-on-one with anyone associated with MIT, including undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, faculty members, staff, spouses and partners, and alumni. 

Job Requirements

REQUIRED master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in one of the following: scientific and technical writing, rhetoric, teaching English as a second language, composition studies, or writing center theory and practice.  Must have at least two years of teaching experience in a college writing center, preferably a center that works with both graduate and undergraduate students and experience working with STEM documents.  At least one year of teaching college academic writing is preferred. Job #17229
