EDUCATION AND OUTREACH MANAGERMedia Laboratory-Open Ocean Initiative, to support the education and outreach mission of the Open Ocean Initiative, bringing the following opportunities to the public--citizen-science and exploration efforts, student-enabled exploration, and increased educational access to ocean images/videos/data. Responsibilities include developing content/programming for all levels, from K-12 to postgraduate, formal and informal education to public education; developing programs focused on offering school- and community-based STEAM education opportunities to underserved communities; collaborating on building a team of trainers and volunteers; assisting with developing an online community through user feedback testing and running training sessions; assisting with mentoring graduate students engaged in research projects; conducting user testing and training for a developing global online community of ocean explorers; and other duties as assigned.  

The Open Ocean Initiative works at the intersection of science, technology, art, and society to design and deploy new ways to discover and connect people to the ocean.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED Ph.D. in oceanography or related field; commitment to ocean exploration and conservation; working knowledge of oceanography and ocean exploration and technology; excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills; self-motivation; experience with program/project management, overseeing complex projects, and coordinating teams; demonstrated success building/maintaining community relationships; supervisory, mentoring, and advising experience; experience supporting and developing courses and event operations; expertise developing, coordinating, and implementing education and public outreach products/programs about ocean and ocean discovery; and proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Apps, project management software (Trello, Basecamp), Slack, MailChimp, and data-driven outreach software (EveryAction, Crowdskout).  Experience working in an academic environment and experience at MIT and/or Media Lab preferred. Job #17236

Must be able to carry out routine field work performed in aquatic and marine environments (marsh, lake, coastal, open ocean).  

This is a six-month appointment with the possibility of extension based on funding availability and project needs.
