Why Northumbria University

Northumbria University, situated in the heart of the city of Newcastle, is a dynamic and aspirational university, firmly committed to excellence in research, teaching and enterprise. The University holds an institutional Athena SWAN Award in recognition of its organisational and cultural practices promoting gender equality. As a researcher within the Department of Psychology, you would have access to a wide range of research resources, including: DEXA body composition scanner, 3DMD photogrammetry body scanner, 14-camera Vicon motion capture suite, SR Research and Tobii eye tracking equipment, NIRS, transcranial magnetic stimulation, an immersive virtual reality suite, a two-bedroom sleep laboratory, psychophysiologic assessment tools (e.g. GSR, EEG, EMG), and wet labs for taking human samples. Our popular Psychology courses cater to a vibrant student community of nearly 1000 undergraduate students and nearly 200 postgraduate students, across two undergraduate and five postgraduate programmes, and we are now embarking on an ambitious phase of trans-national education.  The Department actively works with all academic staff to ensure teaching activity does not come at the expense of research time, and promotes engagement with sabbaticals to facilitate the development of grant submissions and collaborative projects.
