The Opportunity

Reporting to the Human Ethics Coordinator, you will oversee the compliance and support for a number of research ethics committees, including providing specialist advice to all relevant stakeholders on human research ethics matters. You will have the opportunity to make significant contributions to the strategic and operational plans, policies and procedures relating to human research ethics.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide expert advice and support to researchers in their development and design of human research ethics applications prior to committee review and preparation of notifications of adverse events
  • Schedule and organise human ethics committee, executive and panel meetings including agendas, meeting papers and minutes, and records management
  • Promote awareness of human research ethics issues through the provision of high-profile education and training initiatives in both online and face to face environments
  • Addressing compliance requirements by external and internal regulatory bodies regarding human research ethics
  • Resolve complex problems and enquiries, including investigating and managing complaints and coordinating with the relevant stakeholders
  • Develop, implement and update human ethics online resources
  • Proactively utilise and identify improvements to the information systems to deliver the best user experience for researchers and to ensure a secure and compliant electronic environment records

The Research Ethics & Compliance Support (RECS) team coordinates committees and processes for research involving humans, animals, gene technology, radiation safety and research export controls and provides advice on legislative and other requirements in these areas. Committees include the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and its Human Research Ethics Advisory Panels (HREAPs). RECS also coordinate other research compliance areas such as export controls, drone use and quarantine.

About the successful applicant

You can demonstrate your success supporting and providing expert advice to research and or risk and compliance committees.

Key requirements include:

  • Degree qualification in a relevant discipline
  • High level analytical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to interact with stakeholders and provide expert advice on human ethics
  • High-level knowledge of Codes and legislation related to human research ethics and skills to interpret accordingly
  • Experience providing secretariat support to committees and working within a paperless, electronic environment
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities
