Job description

Three full-time Early Stage Researcher (ESR) PhD studentships positions are available in the APPFlow Marie Skodowska-Curie Action - Innovative Training Network - European Industrial Doctorate which is funded by Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission.

The ESRs will be employed by Queen's University Belfast (QUB) and also enrolled as PhD students in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (CCE) at QUB. This is a European Industrial Doctorate (EID) programme, therefore the ESRs will spend 50% of their time carrying out research at the industrial beneficiary, the Arran Chemical Company (a member of Almac Group), which is in Althlone, Ireland.

The overall aim of the research in APPFlow is to develop more efficient, sustainable and safer chemical processes for the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Research will explore synthetic organic and catalytic chemistry and the benefits of carrying out reactions under continuous flow conditions, as opposed to traditional batch conditions that are normally employed by the pharmaceutical industry. ESRs will develop expertise and knowledge in chemistry, chemical engineering and also receive training in broader areas to develop transferable skills that will make the ESRs highly employable at the end of this programme.

Successful applicants will be offered a 36-month employee contract at QUB, and receive a salary set out by the Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) regulations. This includes a basic salary (with pension) of GBP 32,016 per annum, and a mobility allowance (GBP 406 per month) and, if appropriate, a family allowance (GBP 338 per month). ESRs will also register for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with QUB (fees are covered in this project) and will be expected to fulfill the associated requirements in order to be awarded such a research degree.

For more information on being an MSCA ESR in APPFlow and to find out more details about the 3 different PhD projects available, please visit www.app-flow.co.uk

Person specification:

  • Possess or about to obtain a 1st class or 2.1 Honours Degree or equivalent in chemistry or chemical engineering.
  • Relevant experience of synthetic chemistry or catalysis or process design.
  • Willingness to carry out PhD research in both academic and industrial environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to logically conceptualise, summarise and communicate research findings.
  • Demonstrate that you meet the English language requirements
  • Satisfy the eligibility requirements for an early stage researcher under the Horizon 2020 ITN Programme.

Applications for the positions will be through a central application process hosted by Queen's University Belfast. Your application should include a CV and cover letter. Before customising your CV and cover letter for this application you should carefully read the job description, candidate information/selection criteria and the APPFlow website. Your CV and cover letter must demonstrate clearly and unambiguously how your experience, education and research background meets the essential criteria (and where applicable desirable criteria).
