Job Summary

The University of Michigan is a world research environment. The College of Literature, Science and Arts in collaboration with the College of Pharmacy, Michigan Medicine and the Life Sciences Institute has established a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) research core with a focus on biomolecules. This BioNMR core facility is seeking a research staff scientist with experience and knowledge in assisting clients from varying backgrounds, in utilizing NMR spectroscopic methods and tailoring them for their research needs. Outreach, training, support, and collaboration with diverse users across the campus will be essential.

Responsibilities*

Duties generally include, but are not limited to, operation and routine maintenance of NMR instrumentation and the recruitment, training, and application support of core lab clients. The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a scientist with specialized knowledge in modern hetero-nuclear Biomolecular NMR methods and preferably have some experience with small molecule solution-phase NMR spectroscopy. This position will involve to understanding, supporting and collaborating with client’s NMR specific research goals.
  • The position requires in-depth knowledge in parameter optimization, pulse sequence development, triple-resonance assignments, structural calculation, and dynamics studies. Some experience on analysis of small molecule NMR spectroscopy data is preferable.
  • Assist in development of documentation for users and maintaining web site.
  • Prepare sample for NMR analysis and should be able to suggest proper sample preparation strategies to clients for successful collection of NMR experiment.
  • Consult and collaborate with local and regional research community on NMR experiments, applications and publication.
  • Train new clients, who are primarily graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. This includes assisting individual users in NMR experiment planning, data collection, data analysis, pulse-sequence implementation/modification, and evaluating and interpreting data.
  • Perform technical operations including cryogen fills; monitoring, operating and calibrating three 600 MHz and one 800 MHz NMR instrumentation; coordinating with IT to maintain software and network operations.
  • Administrative duties include scheduling and providing training to new clients, tracking and reporting usage, billing, and coordinating with instrument manufacturers as needed for maintenance arid repair.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in in Chemistry/Biology/Biophysics or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience running NMR experiments in an academic or industrial setting.
  • Experience performing routine maintenance and repairs on various NMR instruments.
  • Experience handling cryogenic liquids utilized in NMR spectroscopy.
  • Know-how of setting up NMR experiments to perform triple-resonance assignments, structural calculation, and dynamics studies.
  • Technical knowledge of all aspects of sample preparation for collecting a successful NMR experiment.
  • Knowledge of small molecule NMR spectroscopic methods is desirable.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a strong ability to work across multiple units and with diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently. Attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and displaying a service-oriented attitude.
  • Must have strong computer skills (LINUX, Excel, Word etc).
  • Strong interpersonal skills along with demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in providing instruction/training to others.
  • Proven ability to adapt as priorities shift.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Ph.D. degree in Chemistry/Biology/Biophysics or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience is strongly desired.
