FASS Central Faculty Admin
Salary: Competitive Salary
Post Type: Full Time
Closing Date: Sunday 07 April 2019
Interview Date: Friday 26 April 2019
The University of Surrey is seeking to appoint a permanent Professorial Teaching Fellow in one of the nine areas of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS): Economics, Guildford School of Acting, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Law, Literature and Languages, Music and Media Politics, Sociology or Surrey Business School. This is leadership position and the candidate should demonstrate extensive and sustained excellence and academic experience in learning and teaching and be a national/international leader of educational initiatives. This is a permanent role.
In addition, the post holder will be expected to act in the role of Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching (ADL&T) for the Faculty. This position of ADL&T is offered for a period of three years in the first instance. The post holder will be employed on a permanent academic contract, towards the end of the three year period (with a possible further extension based on performance and agreement).
The ADL&T role is a critical management role for FASS, covering a large student population (approximately half of the University), a complex set of programmes from new degree apprenticeships, Foundation Year, undergraduate, postgraduate taught and doctoral as well as international dual degree programmes through our campus, Surrey International Institute-DUFE, China.
The successful candidate will support the Faculty in our drive to seek innovative and digital approaches to L&T pedagogic development, including online and blended learning, leading a transformative approach to our programme development in line with the University's Education and Corporate strategies.
The ADL&T will require an understanding of learning and teaching contexts and approaches across the fields of the arts, humanities and social sciences and we therefore welcome applications relevant to any academic area of the Faculty. The successful candidate will be placed in the relevant School once appointed, and will resume a permanent role within that area at the end of their tenure as ADL&T.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Our Faculty brings together scholars and students from an extraordinary range of academic disciplines in a learning community dedicated to the discovery and enrichment of the arts, humanities and social sciences. We are a group of artists, entrepreneurs and scholars working to investigate the pleasures, and understand the challenges, of our times.
Each year we welcome more than 7,000 bright, dedicated students onto our degree programmes. Our students know that strong ideals must be coupled with excellence in practice. In FASS, we emphasise the value of research alongside our ‘conservatoire’ culture of learning by doing. Our students engage with the theory and history of their discipline while working on real problems, and have the opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience through our renowned Professional Training placements.
Our dedication to the student experience is demonstrated by our success in the major league tables. We are ranked in the top five UK universities by The Guardian University League Table 2018 for Hospitality and Tourism, Modern Languages and Music, and 1st for Criminology.
Our learning community is global. Our staff is as diverse as our student body. We speak dozens of languages and offer each other learning opportunities that draw on our remarkably different backgrounds. Our alumni hold senior positions in industry and academia across the world and we are proud of the contribution they make to society.
