Northumbria University, supported by the Woon Foundation, is seeking to appoint an outstanding scholar of international repute to lead research around our Woon Gallery and its collection. You will also lead the expansion of the gallery, particularly around artefacts from the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms. 

The Woon Gallery of Asian Art houses a substantial number of items from the Woon Foundation’s collection – selected for their depictions of Buddhist culture and religious belief. As the Woon Tai Jee Professor of Asian Art, you will build and consolidate our global reputation through research and professional practice in art conservation. You will initiate new and impactful research projects that connect and develop the relationship between our collections, conservation practice and cultural studies. Adept at collaborating with colleagues from a range of high-profile institutions and external partners, you will generate external income, supervise PhD students, contribute to collaborative research activity within the Department of Arts and make a significant contribution to the leadership and development of research and knowledge exchange within the Department and wider Faculty. 

You will have particular interest in Asian Art, with preference given to expertise in the culture of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms. You will broaden our established research strengths across cultural studies, history of art and art conservation. Applications are therefore welcome from scholars of art conservation or from any field of cultural or historical studies that could complement our analytical expertise. 

You will be involved in teaching and supervision of graduate students in the practice and theory courses covering the history, technology, and conservation of artefacts and artworks from historic, archaeological and ethnographic contexts. Our Conservation of Fine Art MA is the only course in the UK that offers students the opportunity to study either paper conservation or easel painting conservation and we wish to expand that provision to encompass other materials. Our distance learning Preventive Conservation MA allows students to study within their own location and culture. The Department of Arts is also committed to developing and strengthening its range of cultural partners and the Professor of Art Conservation will play a key role in these exciting developments. 

You will have an international reputation in the field of and a consistent record of excellent research outputs. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching and in scholarly research. Applicants will hold a PhD or equivalent and a record of publications in scholarly journals and involvement in professional associations.
