The Role

The Department of Molecular Sciences (MolSci) is currently seeking a full-time, suitably qualified, Postdoctoral Research Fellow with gut microbiology experience to contribute to our research on the impact of diet and dietary patterns on the gut microbiota, reporting to Distinguished Professor Ian Paulsen.

Within this role, you will be able to examine the impact of various factors on modulating the gut microbiota and explore host-microbiota interactions. Successful applicants will be in-charge of multiple applied microbiota projects, overseeing its initiation, experimentation and coordination. These project are at different levels of completion, and you will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments, data analysis and manuscript writing. You will also have the opportunity to identify new research opportunities to investigate the impact of various factors on the gut microbiota.

The Department of Molecular Sciences in the Faculty of Science and Engineering is a research intensive department of academics and students who study and teach chemistry and molecular cell sciences. The focus of our academics is at the exciting molecular science interfaces with chemistry, biology and materials. Our students gain cross-disciplinary perspectives while developing discipline specific skills in chemistry and biomolecular science. To be considered for this position, applicants must address the selection criteria below, and attach your CV (including a list of two referees), a statement of research interests and achievements.

Essential

  • PhD in microbiology, molecular biology or a related discipline
  • Excellent knowledge of gut microbiology and/or molecular biology techniques
  • Experience in next generation sequencing library preparation, bioinformatics, statistical analysis, graphical representation of data and correlation network analysis
  • Experience in designing and conducting animal trials (using mice as a model) and human clinical trials
  • A strong research track record evidenced by first-authored publications in high quality conference and journal publications
  • A track record working both as an independent researcher and in a team-based environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to relate to and engage with other staff and students.

Desirable

  • One year of previous postdoctoral experience.
  • Previous work in gut microbiology, bioinformatics and in anaerobic culturing of the gut microbiota
  • Experience in mentoring graduate students
  • Ability to work with internal and external collaborators and initiate new collaborations
