CARPENTER, Facilities-Repair and Maintenance, to perform carpentry work in all areas of the Institute using a wide range of carpentry tools. Will repair, install, and maintain all types of wood and metal doors, panic hardware, mortise locks, exit devices, and door closures; install vinyl composition tiles (VCT) and other types of flooring; install drop ceilings and other types of ceilings; build walls using drywall and studs; make and install laminate counters, wooden shelves, and cabinets; and use woodworking tools and machinery such as jointer, shaper, mortise and tenon, lathe and thickness planner, table saws, sander machine, and general hand tools. May be called in to work to board up broken windows or doors or to assist with other emergency repairs.

Job Requirements
REQUIRED: at least seven years’ carpentry experience; high school diploma or its equivalent; ability to work from blueprints, specifications, and sketches; thorough working knowledge of the characteristics of various species of wood and other materials and the safe operation of woodworking tools and machinery; experience in all aspects of the finish trade of cabinet making and finish carpentry, including the manufacturing of laminate and wood countertops, shelves cabinets, and furniture repair; and ability to lift 50 pounds. Vocational training and participation in a carpentry apprenticeship program preferred.

Working conditions include ascending/descending stairs; traversing the campus; moving about the jobsite and machinery to access equipment; remaining stationary for extended periods of time; and working from ladders, scaffolds, roofs, and other above ground locations. Will wear personal protective equipment as required by the specific assignment and MIT-provided ARC flash rated clothing. Environment contains dust, odors, fumes, high noise levels, and temperature extremes. Some work will be performed near steam and moving machinery, in tight areas and confined spaces such as manholes and crawl spaces, with and around chemicals and solvents, and in research labs and animal facilities. May also work outdoors in inclement weather.

Employees assigned to an irregular shift are considered essential personnel. During emergencies, these employees are excused from their regularly scheduled work only with the specific authorization of their supervisor, regardless of any public announcement that MIT is closed. Other employees, who work a regular established work schedule, are not considered essential personnel but may be required to work other shifts on an as needed basis.
