General Summary/Purpose:

Responsible for providing a clean and sterilized living environment for research animals.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Operate mechanical cage washing equipment, autoclaves and other sanitizing equipment.
  • Maintain adequate levels of cage wash chemicals.
  • Scrape and empty pans and cages of soiled bedding.
  • Pre­clean large animal cages for cage wash machinery.
  • Prepare clean rodent cages for autoclaving to include food, bedding, water bottles and appropriate covering.
  • Load assembled cages onto transport racks in preparation for sterilization by steam autoclave.
  • Load, operate and unload steam autoclaves.
  • Place processed bedding, feed and other related items into assembled, sanitized cages.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance schedules, detergent and disinfectant use, cage washer and autoclave performance tests.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on autoclaves and cage washers.
  • Dispose of waste materials.
  • Sweep, mop and disinfect cage wash area at the end of each shift and take all trash to the dumpster.
  • Receive and stock feed and bedding in the storage area.
  • Perform additional cleaning and maintenance in preparation for inspections or as required.
  • Observe all safety policies and procedures and use equipment and chemical treatments properly to avoid harming animals, self, others and damaging property.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

High School Diploma or GED

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and write to maintain records, read instructions, labels, etc.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety practices.
  • Ability to interact and work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a respectful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work under environmental conditions that require the use of safety equipment.
  • Able to lift 1Olbs. of bedding, 25lb bags of feed, operate cage washer, tunnel washer, sterilizer, and cage prep.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
