Chair of Council
By 2025 Britain will be short of 1.8 million engineers: this shortfall will not be solved through apprenticeship schemes or a traditional approach to education. Established in September 2017, The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology is re-engineering education. Our vision is to be the best engineering university in the world, which develops the engineering leaders of the future. Our mission is to build challenging and enriching educational experiences which are free, student centric and aligned with the needs of industry.
The Dyson Institute is seeking to appoint an exceptional individual as the inaugural Chair of Council. This is a unique opportunity to promote good governance during a period of both growth and opportunity, not only for The Dyson Institute but also for the higher education sector and its relationship with industry. The successful candidate will be an experienced ambassador, with the ability to gain the respect and confidence of a broad range of internal and external stakeholders. The Council works to ensure innovation, student wellbeing and quality underpin key strategic decision making. She or he will work closely with, and in support of the Director, Duncan Piper, as well as with other Council members and officers.
The successful candidate will likely demonstrate a depth of experience and understanding of higher education and academic governance. Candidates could come from a range of educational backgrounds, she or he may have held a key executive or non-executive position at a forward-thinking institution, or a leader within a specialised or engineering focused academic institution. She or he will have an enabling and collaborative style with first class chairing skills. The Chair should engender respect at all levels of the organisation and have highly developed interpersonal and communication skills. The ability to influence and persuade at the most senior levels in private and public sector contexts and to forge strong partnerships will be important.
