About the position

The vision of the Department of Biomedical Laboratory Science is science and technology for better diagnostic and health care. Our strategic focus is education of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists and research aiming to improve diagnostics and treatment of cancer patients. Our research activities contributes to the development of improved diagnostics and personalized therapy based on new understanding of basal cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in tumour development. Ongoing research particularly focus on cell-to-cell communication, drug interactions and regulation of starvation responses (autophagy) in solid tumours.

We are looking to further develop our expertise within the field of cell- and molecular biology, increase our research activity and develop our teaching within biomedical laboratory sciences.

The position is expected to establishing own research activities and apply for and lead externally funded projects. The position may be offered as a full professorship to an established researcher or at the associate professor level for candidates earlier in their career that show future promise.

The Department is centrally located in an active environment for research and development and embedded within the areas of the laboratories of St. Olav`s University hospital and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at NTNU with access to state of the art core facilities for genomic, proteomic and imaging studies as well as an animal facility.

The position reports to Head of Department.

Work description

The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing research activity that address relevant issues within basic cell biology and molecular mechanisms for future diagnostics in personalized cancer treatment and contribute to clinical, theoretical and technological development. The established research activity is expected to utilize and explore academic, methodical and/or technological synergies within existing research activity at the Department. The research activity should enhance the interaction between molecular biology/medicine and technology and strengthen the department's collaboration with clinical departments and other research groups locally, nationally and internationally.

The successful candidate will be jointly responsible for teaching activities at the Department Biomedical Laboratory Science within the topics immunology, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, and various subjects in medical laboratory technology. The position holder is also expected to take part in developing new courses at bachelor and master level and in courses for continuing education within Biomedical Laboratory Science. Supervision of undergraduate students, master students and PhD candidates is a natural part of the job.

Qualification requirements

Professor:

The applicant should hold a PhD and document a strong research and academic competence within cell- and molecular biology, preferably within the topic cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in cancer and cancer development. The position requires experience with analyzes of biological samples, documented competence with high-capacity protein-, RNA- or DNA-analyzes and broad and relevant technological competence. Experience form relevant animal models will be emphasized.

The applicant’s research must be documented and of high international quality, showing both breadth and depth. Production must reflect an independent research profile and show the ability to take up new research issues. Continuous research activity is a prerequisite for the granting of professorial competence. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within his or her subject area. The emphasis is particularly on academic work during the past five years.

The evaluation of the applicants will also emphasize successful interdisciplinary collaboration. The research plan should describe how the planned activities may strengthen and benefit from the ongoing research at the department, how the planned activities can be externally funded and how it complies with the strategic visions of the department and NTNU. Emphasis will also be placed on a documented commitment to teaching, development of teaching materials, and supervision of students at all levels.

Associate Professor:

The position of Associate Professor requires university education in Cell- and Molecular Biology at least at doctoral level.

The qualifications requirements with respect to field of expertise and interest are the same as listed above but opens for applicants that not yet meet all the requirements for a full professor. The potential to initiate and lead research and development work will be emphasized. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within his or her subject area. The main emphasis is on academic work published during the last five years and on the research plan that must describe how the planned activities merge with and strengthen the ongoing activities at the department and its collaborators.

Other requirements:

Basic qualifications in the discipline of education are required. Anyone who is appointed without having formal basic qualifications in the discipline of education (formerly referred to as practical qualifications in teaching at university level) and who is unable to document equivalent qualifications is required to complete an approved course within two years of appointment. Uniped at NTNU offers qualifying courses.

Pedagogical skills and qualifications will be emphasized. The evaluation will be based on documented material related to teaching, forms of presentation for the academic works, experience in teaching, supervision of doctoral, master and bachelor students as well as other types of pedagogical background. Applicants with teaching experience at university level will be preferred. Quality and breadth will be evaluated. 

The person appointed must comply with the decisions about changes due to developments in the subject area, and the organizational changes that may result from decisions regarding the university's activities.

The departments teaching activities is mainly executed in Norwegian and applicants who can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is preferred. For applicants who do not meet this requirement, it is a prerequisite that they within three years of appointment can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course in Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions

The position as Professor/Associate Professor is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund,

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.

We are responsible for the bachelor’s degree programmes for medical laboratory technologists at NTNU. We conduct research in areas relevant to the teaching we provide and to the development of medical diagnostics. We work in close cooperation with the University Hospital, St Olavs Hospital. The Department of Biomedical Laboratory Science is one of eight departments in the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
