CRYOGENIC RESEARCH ENGINEER, Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC), to be responsible for a wide range of projects in the design, procurement, deployment, and analysis of cryogenic systems. Will oversee and develop cryogenics capabilities and infrastructure, focusing primarily on the design, fabrication, and testing of high-field, high-current, superconducting magnets for SPARC and other applications; develop large-scale cryogenic and magnet systems and conduct low-temperature research experiments, including the testing and characterization of cryogenic components; perform thermal modeling of cryogenic systems (bath-cooled systems, complex force flow helium circuits, natural convection loops, and conduction cooled components); and design magnet cryostats, current leads, and feeder lines.  Will follow projects from concept, design, specification, fabrication, and testing to start-up operation.  

The PSFC recently announced a new accelerated pathway to fusion energy that is based on the development and demonstration of the world’s highest performing superconducting fusion magnets and design of the first net-energy fusion device--the SPARCtokamak. 

Job Requirements

REQUIREDPh.D. in mechanical engineering or other engineering discipline; experience base in large-scale cryogenic and superconducting magnet systems; at least five years’ experience with state-of-the-art cryogenic system design, including dewars, cryostats, transfer lines, thermal shield systems, helium liquefaction and refrigeration systems, and cryocoolers; demonstrated ability to design and analyze superconducting magnet cryostats, current leads, feeder lines, and peripheral cryogenic systems; ability to specify cryogenic components and systems and follow through on fabrication, procurement, assembly, start-up, and operation; ability to supervise technicians in laboratory experiments and work cooperatively with an interdisciplinary group of engineers and graduate students; and knowledge of high-quality vacuum system technology.  Knowledge of computer systems for design, analysis, and experimental data acquisition a plus. Job #17200
