Assistant Professor in Geotechnical Engineering (Ref. 19031107)
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering enjoys a high reputation in conducting application-oriented research and has well established connections with industry partners and government agencies in Hong Kong. It offers academic programmes at various levels. In addition to PhD and MSc programmes, the Department currently offers 3 undergraduate programmes, namely BEng(Hons) in Civil Engineering, BEng(Hons) in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development and BSc(Hons) in Environmental and Occupational Safety and Health, with a new BEng(Hons) in Sustainable Structural and Fire Engineering programme to be launched in 2019/20. The Department currently has about 44 faculty members and 38 technical and administrative personnel, and is committed to international standards of excellence in teaching and research. The appointee will be required to (a) teach relevant undergraduate and postgraduate subjects, such as Rock Engineering, Advanced Rock Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Engineering Analysis and Computation; (b) supervise final year projects and theses; (c) initiate, lead, and participate in research activities; and (d) undertake relevant administrative duties, including programme leadership, curriculum development, programme validation and accreditation, etc.
Applicants should (a) have a PhD degree in Rock Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering or equivalent fields; (b) have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research; (c) have a good record of research, publications, and scholarship; (d) be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills and have good interpersonal skills; and (e) possess research interest in, but not limited to, one or more of the following areas: (i) Geomechanics; (ii) Tunnelling; (iii) Underground Space; (iv) Cavern Engineering; (v) Numerical Simulations; (vi) Physical Modelling; (vii) Slope Stability; and (viii) Landslides. Preference will be given to those with a good undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and practical work experience in geotechnical design. Relevant professional qualifications and work experience as a civil engineer or geotechnical engineer will be an asset.
Remuneration and Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
