The Kirby Institute is a leading global research institute dedicated to the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Established in 1986 in response to the then emerging HIV epidemic, the Kirby Institute now contributes to knowledge on a broad range of diseases, including viral hepatitis and sexually transmissible infections. Focusing on the coordination of national surveillance programs, population health and epidemiological research, clinical and behavioural research and clinical trials, the Kirby Institute’s research projects are conducted in partnership with communities most affected by epidemics.

The Kirby Institute is conducting a study (ReINVEST) through the Justice Health Research Program on men with impulsive behaviours. To facilitate the study, we are looking for a Senior Nurse who will act as a Team Lead/Consultant in carrying out the clinical trials on men with impulsive behaviours in a designated area of NSW, in this case Newcastle. The study will look at the implication of medications to reduce the violent or aggressive behaviours in male offenders. This involves recruiting men from local courts and community correction centres. You will work with a small team and manage the studies in Newcastle as well as surrounding areas such Maitland and Toronto.

As a Team Lead you will be responsible for overseeing the clinical study as well as be involved in the participant enrollment and running the trials. You will plan and develop study specific processes, documentation and resources. This will involve conducting assessment and monitoring including comprehensive psychiatric assessment, physical examination and completing all study tools. You will ensure that the studies are conducted according to ICH-GCP requirements set out by NHMRC as well as TGA guidelines on Good Clinical Practice. Staff mentoring and providing support to the other Team leaders is also a part of your role.

The position will involve direct contact with male offenders on a daily basis as well as other stakeholders such as interaction with Legal Aid, Magistrates, Police, Private Legal Practitioners, Community Corrections Staff and Prosecutors. Hence, possessing excellent communication and interpersonal skills together with the ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds is essential to the role.

To be successful in the role you will have the following attributes:

  • Qualification as a Registered Nurse, Registered Psychologist, or Clinical Psychologist with a current licence to practice from the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with minimum five years post graduate experience in mental health
  • Masters’ Degree in a mental health related field, or equivalent (or currently enrolled)
  • Experience in leading a small team and contributing to the training of other staff members
  • Experience in conducting clinical research and demonstrated experience in screening and clinical management of offender and experience working in community correctional facilities or in a similar setting
  • Clinical experience dealing with violent offenders or aggressive clients with proven clinical assessment skills, with a track record of comprehensive mental state examinations
  • Have an understanding of psychometric tools used to assess impulsivity and personality disorders and knowledge of Good Clinical Research Practice Guidelines (ICH-GCP)
