Job Summary

The Department of Pharmacology seeks a well-qualified and highly-motivated individual to serve as the Student Affairs Program Manager to promote student/trainee learning and career development.

Responsibilities*

  • Promote student/trainee learning and career development for the University of Michigan, Department of Pharmacology. Specific job duties are detailed below.
  • The candidate will manage undergraduate, summer fellowship, masters, PhD, and postdoctoral education programs with faculty leads.
  • Serve as primary point of conduct for Pharmacology students and postdocs. Advise and provide tools and resources to trainees regarding program design, career development, and overall wellness. Monitor trainee progress and provide individual feedback to students and postdocs through milestones, graduation, and their completion of training.
  • Facilitate recruitment, admissions, and enrollment processes, including working closely with Rackham Graduate School and the Program in Biomedical Sciences, and the Pharmacology faculty.
  • Analyze current marketing, admissions, training, and outcomes of departmental training programs, including diversity, and work with faculty to develop strategies to improve success.
  • Assist the Associate Chair for Education with curriculum management (e.g. course schedule, GSI assignments, teaching evaluations, Canvas, CARF.) Communicate program requirements, expectations, and changes.
  • Coordinate summer fellowship grant submission and programs. Seek and write for additional educational and student funding support (internal and external) as needed. Assist with NIH training grant submissions and programs.
  • Lead Pharmacology alumni outreach. Coordinate Pharmacology alumni relations and events.
  • Plan and execute career development, leadership, and social events for the Department.
  • Contribute trainee-related material or property to social media, web, and communication efforts pertaining to the education mission. Coordinate and assist with social media outreach including web design and the departmental newsletter.
  • Serve as the staff lead for several Departmental committees, including the Graduate Program Committee, Education Leadership, Alumni Steering Committee, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  • Collaborate with relevant offices across campus, including the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs, Office of Health, Equity and Inclusion, Rackham Graduate School, Office of the Registrar, Student Services, Financial Operations, Payroll, Career Center, Pre-Health Advisors, CAPS, and FASCCO.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of related experience in academic program management, student services, or student advising.
  • Previous experience leading recruitment, admissions, and marketing efforts in a graduate and/or postdoctoral program in the biomedical sciences.
  • Successful track record of managing educational and training programs with multiple projects and stakeholders.
  • Experience in web design, digital media, and social media.
  • Demonstrated initiative, excellent judgment, diplomacy, and service-oriented attitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and build relationships with individuals and faculty, staff and student groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, ideologies, populations, including personal and social orientations.
  • Knowledge of issues and concepts related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Wolverine Access, University reporting tools, and University general policies/procedures.
  • Knowledge of policies and trends affecting graduate and/or biomedical science education.
  • Experiencing planning and leading large educational workshops.
