The College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) at Auburn University is seeking a qualified Master Teacher to work as a Physics Specialist with the Alabama Science in Motion Program. 

The qualified candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the physics component of Science in Motion at Auburn University, including visits to high school physics classrooms in the eight-county AU In-Service Region, and on-going documentation of equipment usage.

Specific job responsibilities include:

  1. Work a minimum 40-hour workweek, including the submission of a weekly itinerary to ASIM Project Director.
  2. Recruit high school science teachers to participate in AMSTI-ASIM.
  3. Establish and maintain open communication with the ALSDE, project director, and teachers.
  4. Schedule a visit to each AMSTI-ASIM classroom teacher at least once a month during the academic school year.
  5. Implement a flexible communication system for scheduling labs with participating teachers.
  6. Be knowledgeable and proficient in all AMSTI-ASIM activities/labs. This includes learning the background content, how to utilize the activities/labs, and how to teach this information to students and teachers.
  7. Prepare activities/labs and supplies for the lab. Order, organize, and maintain activities/labs and supplies so they are readily available for classroom use.
  8. Deliver activities/labs and supplies to participating AMSTI-ASIM teachers as scheduled. This includes physically moving activities/labs and supplies from storage to vehicle to classroom and driving the AMSTI-ASIM vehicle.
  9. Pick up activities/labs and supplies from participating AMSTI-ASIM teachers in a timely manner.
  10. Ensure that all Grades 9-12 science students, “regardless of the students’ prior achievement levels in science or other academic coursework,” have an equitable chance of access to AMSTI-ASIM program activities through their science classes
  11. Collaborate with colleagues to plan training schedules to best meet the needs of teachers in the region.
  12. Provide on-site support and mentoring for new or beginning teachers, whenever possible. This may include, but is not limited to, assist with laboratory activities, deliver on-site professional development, and provide other training, as needed.
  13. Provide coaching to teachers to help increase their skills and move them to higher performance levels in the current teacher evaluation system.
  14. Plan and implement workshops to train high school science teachers to use AMSTI-ASIM activities/labs. This includes teaching teachers the content background, how to use the activities/labs, and how to effectively lead students through the lab.
  15. Plan and implement workshops to train high school science teachers in other areas of science education such as laboratory safety, Science Course of Study, assessment, and other topics, as needed.
  16. Attend statewide specialist meetings, participating in the continual improvement and implementation of AMSTI-ASIM.
  17. Work with AMSTI-ASIM teachers and other specialists in developing new lab activities for high school students.
  18. Facilitate the timely preparation and submission of the quarterly financial reports that include proper categorization of expenditures.
  19. Organize, properly update, and promptly submit Program Report information (visits, class roster, workshop attendance, AMSTI-ASIM inventory, and workshop agendas).
  20. Communicate the use of AMSTI-ASIM activities/labs and training to ALSDE-ASIM, project directors/principal investigators, system superintendents, principals, and teachers on a regular basis.
  21. Facilitate the cleaning and maintenance of the AMSTI-ASIM vehicle.
  22. Collaborate with the AMSTI site director and specialists to coordinate work with the AMSTI site, whenever possible.
  23. Assist AMSTI Program with the development and piloting of new activities/labs as requested.

Specialist workdays shall conform to a regular schedule (for example 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) that allows services to be provided during school hours.

Responsibilities may occasionally require work beyond the regular workday schedule.

The salary will be determined via the statewide salary matrix for Science Specialists.
