Course Description

Honors 242: Controversy in Scientific Discovery Throughout history, scientific advancement unaccompanied by controversy has been rare. From the nature of the carbocation in organic chemistry to the role of humans in global warming, experimental protocols, data interpretation, and intellectual contributions have been the source of significant disagreement among scientists and in the broader community. Here we will examine controversial discoveries in the last 60 years, putting the central findings on trial in the classroom. This will include an evaluation of the scientific ideas as well as a survey of the changing role and nature of scientific discourse from the 1950s to the present day. Further, we will investigate the influence of institutionalized discrimination on the perception of discoveries by both the scientific community and society at large. As part of the Honors Core Curriculum, this course introduces Honors students to the fields, questions, and methodologies of the Natural Sciences. The course will include significant writing, as it satisfies the First-Year Writing requirement.
