We have an exciting opportunity for a talented researcher to join Professor George Davey Smith’s research programme within the MRC Integrative Epidemiology unit (MRC-IEU) at the University of Bristol to work on the identification of causal risk factors for disease progression using large genetic datasets.
Most studies of disease aetiology have investigated disease onset as the outcome of interest. We hypothesise that there may be alternative mechanisms that influence the progression of disease after onset, which will be more relevant for the development of effective treatment.
Within the MRC-IEU we have access to several genetic datasets of disease progression phenotypes, including from large cohorts (Million Veteran Program, CHARGE) and clinical trials (from collaborations with Pharmaceutical partners) and have a programme of methodological development in this area, to deal with the statistical challenges of working with selected samples. This post provides the unique opportunity to test and apply novel methodologies for genome-wide association and Mendelian randomization in the context of disease progression phenotypes.
We are seeking either a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate (appointed grade level depending on experience) to join the programme. This post is offered as an open-ended contract with current funding available until 31st March 2023 and involves the opportunity to develop and lead your own research projects in this exciting area.
You will have a background in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics or statistic, with experience using statistical programming languages (such as R) and working with large-scale genetic datasets.
