Position Description
The newly established Nascent Transcriptomics Core at Harvard Medical School is looking for a Director of Bioinformatics to oversee the development and implementation of data analysis strategies for nascent and newly synthesized RNA-sequencing assays (such as Start-seq, PRO-seq, metabolically-labeled RNA-seq). In addition to providing a direct, global read-out of transcription activity and RNA processing, these assays have emerged as optimal strategies for identification of regulatory elements such as enhancers and lncRNAs. Thus, this new facility will address the increasing demand for genomic assays of regulatory elements, and will empower clinicians to better characterize the enhancer landscape in diseased cells and tissues. Given the novelty of such strategies, the field lacks efficient software tools and pipelines for analysis of nascent RNA-seq and identification of regulatory elements from these data types. The Bioinformatics Director will play a central role in developing these resources, working with the Adelman lab (https://adelman.hms.harvard.edu/), researchers in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and other HMS groups with relevant expertise.
The Bioinformatics Director will be responsible for establishing data management and analysis workflows within the Nascent Transcriptomics Core, using the HMS high-performance computing cluster, O2. This position will have a high degree of independence and will appeal to innovative team-players who are keen to use their skills to contribute to multiple projects in an interactive manner. The Director is anticipated to establish fruitful collaborations with researchers across the HMS community, generating data for publications and presentations of their work at national scientific symposia and workshops.
Basic Qualifications
Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in computational biology, or a related field, and have experience with a wide variety of tools for genome analysis and statistics, including R and Python.
Additional Qualifications
Excellent command of written and spoken English is essential, as are strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Direct experience with Next Generation sequencing data is strongly preferred.
