Research Associate

Department : St John's Institute of Dermatology

The successful candidate will work on pre-clinical studies to develop a novel form of cell spray-on ex vivo gene therapy for recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), an inherited blistering skin disease with high morbidity and mortality.

Work is divided into three main areas of investigation: (i) generation of proof-of-concept data for successful isolation and expansion of primary skin stem cells; (ii) development of lentiviral vectors for gene therapy of RDEB by targeting primary keratinocyte and fibroblast cells; (iii) optimisation of engraftment of gene-modified keratinocytes and fibroblasts in vivo after spray-on delivery; this phase of the work will be done in part collaboratively with a biotechnology company specialising in cell spray technology. Successful completion of this initial proof-of-concept phase of the project can potentially lead to extension of the post for a further 2 years.

Once all pre-clinical data are obtained, the aim of the project is for clinical translation to first-in-man clinical trials.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 2 years.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

The selection process will include an application process and a panel interview.
