The appointee to this position will be part of a team responsible for educating future speech pathologists at one of the world's leading educational institutions focusing on the tropics. The appointee will be a speech pathologist with academic, clinical and/or clinical teaching experience. Duties will include teaching in both clinical education and academic subjects, research, and academic and service tasks as directed.

Division of Tropical Health and Medicine

The Office of the Division of Tropical Health and Medicine (DTHM) provides collaborative leadership with the Colleges and ensures that the Colleges are able to deliver the core business of learning and teaching, research and engagement and contribute effectively to the strategic agenda. The Division office drives the strategic objectives of the Division and also services a proportion of College administrative operations.

  • Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences

College of Healthcare Sciences

As part of the Division of Tropical Health and Medicine  the College of Healthcare Sciences promotes, fosters, supports and administers quality teaching and research at JCU in the areas of Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Nursing and Midwifery, Psychology, Sport and Exercise Science and Clinical Exercise Physiology. Working in a collaborative leadership model with the Office of the Division, other DTHM Colleges and the Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health, the College of Healthcare Sciences contributes to advancing the strategic agenda and to strengthening partnerships and engagement.

The appointee will be required to:

  1. Develop and coordinate a suite of academic and/or clinical education subjects for undergraduate speech pathology students; 
  2. Deliver both academic and clinical education for undergraduate speech pathology students; 
  3. Supervise postgraduate and  undergraduate research students;
  4. Contribute to development of a curriculum that provides high quality professional education and equips graduates to work in tropical, rural, remote and Indigenous health contexts; 
  5. Contribute to the body of expertise in communication and/or swallowing disorders and to the intellectual life of the School;
  6. Undertake research in fields of own expertise; 
  7. Contribute to administrative processes within the School; 
  8. Become involved in the profession of speech pathology in North Queensland;
  9. Contribute to development of excellent clinical services and clinical education 
  10. Support the University’s commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.  

  1. The Lecturer is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Lecturer is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our Workplace Health and Safety performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University Workplace Health and Safety policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. 
  3. The Lecturer is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.


Key Selection Criteria

  1. Eligibility for membership of the Speech Pathology Association of Australia;
  2. A qualification in speech pathology equivalent to or higher than Australian Bachelor (Honours) degree and preferably a PhD in a cognate area particularly developmental speech and/or language disorders and/or linguistics;
  3. Demonstrated experience and expertise in one or more of areas of speech pathology practice, particularly developmental speech and/or language disorders; 
  4. Demonstrated experience and expertise in speech pathology clinical service provision and/or in clinical education for speech pathology students; 
  5. An understanding of current methods of tertiary speech pathology education, and the capacity to play an active role in the development and delivery of tertiary education programs in speech pathology; 
  6. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team; 
  7. Skills in time management, oral and written communication, problem solving, and the use of computers for professional and academic purposes.

Desirable Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience in linguistics and/or developmental language and speech disorders;
  2. Demonstrated experience and expertise in the delivery and management of clinical education programs for speech pathology students;
  3. Demonstrated knowledge in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander speech and language;
  4. Demonstrated experience in the delivery of tertiary education programs; 
  5. Demonstrated experience and success in speech pathology research
  6. Experience in, or willingness to embrace the knowledge, skills and ideas relevant to tropical, rural and remote practice and to working with Indigenous Australians;
  7. Willingness to undertake a tertiary teaching qualification.
