Associate Director, Ethics and Compliance
Stanford has a strong history of cultivating a rich ethics and compliance culture, coupled with knowledgeable and effective management in administrative and academic departments; this has enabled a decentralized approach to managing ethics and compliance activities across the institution.
Job Scope, Duties, and Responsibilities:
The Associate Director of Ethics and Compliance provides strategic leadership and management for the University’s institutional ethics and compliance program. In coordination with the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, develop, implement and maintain an effective institution-wide ethics and compliance program designed to prevent, monitor, detect and respond to non-compliance.
In coordination with the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer and OGC, serves as a key advisor to senior leadership on all compliance related issues. In coordination with Internal Audit and Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), evaluates the effectiveness of compliance activities. Identifies and develops initiatives to address and resolve strategic and/or University-wide ethics and compliance areas of concern.
Ensures coordination and resolution of issues with senior leadership of organizations responsible for compliance. Develop, coordinate, and participate in educational and training programs to enhance awareness of ethics and compliance requirements and responsibilities.
The Associate Director reports to the Stanford University Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer.
He/she maintains close working relationships with the university’s senior leadership, especially the Office of General Counsel (OGC), Human Resources, Internal Audit, and Enterprise Risk Management.
In coordination with the Senior Associate Vice President and the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, he/she will prepare the results of university ethics and compliance activities for the Audit, Compliance and Risk Committee of the Board of Trustees and the Cabinet.
The Associate Director develops and implements annual ethics and compliance plans for the university based on systematic and ongoing risk assessment conducted in coordination with senior leadership.
Serves as a point-of-contact for the Ethics and Compliance Helpline and conducts preliminary assessments. Directs questions to appropriate offices and follows-up to ensure appropriate corrective and disciplinary actions are taken. Coordinates related investigations with Chief Audit Executive and other offices, as appropriate.
Assist in the administration of the department, including preparation of the annual Ethics and Compliance activity report and performance of special projects.
Provides “early warning” services to the entire campus regarding new regulations or compliance initiatives by government audit or regulatory agencies.
The institutional compliance program is based on the Federal Sentencing Guidelines criteria for effective compliance and ethics programs.
Qualifications:
Minimum Education and Experience Required:
- Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant audit, ethics and compliance, or other relevant experience in higher education, health care, research-based non-profit organizations, or government contracting.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning and change management skills. Ability to lead and motivate others and earn the respect of associates at all levels.
- Highly effective written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Proven presentation experience and comfort with senior management audiences and effective facilitation skills with diverse groups.
- Excellent strategic skills to craft and help implement organizational strategies and plans for campus-wide initiatives.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills. Able to influence people, solve problems, trouble shoot, think creatively, and resolve conflicts.
- Significant experience in assessing compliance risks in a large research university or other complex environment. Working knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance. Familiarity with the Federal Sentencing Guidelines criteria for effective compliance and ethics programs.
Desired:
Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, JD), and additional professional certifications (e.g., CFE).
