Job Summary

For over 50 years, Caltech's public events program has offered the Caltech family and the community at large a gateway to world-class scientists, artists, and speakers, making the Institute one of Southern California's acknowledged cultural centers. Science lectures, performing arts, folk music, chamber music—Caltech Live! offers top-flight events at multiple locations on campus.

The Campus Programs Director is responsible for planning, marketing, contracting, and coordinating with the Ticket Office and Campus Event Production group for approximately 150 annual events held in Beckman Auditorium, Ramo Auditorium, and on Beckman Mall. 

Reporting to the Chief Strategic Communications Officer, the Director of Campus Programs will manage all aspects of campus programs and performing arts outreach, including sponsorship and marketing with the goal of increasing attendance at and support for Caltech’s programming. The Director will develop a program of events, lectures, and performances designed to culturally enrich the lives of external and internal audiences alike that reflects and supports Institute’s scientific, outreach, and cultural aspirations. Additionally, the Director will manage and provide leadership to the staff of the Campus Programs group. Moreover, the Director will work closely with Campus Event Production group, the Ticket Office and Office of Strategic Communications.

Job Duties

  • Lead the Campus Programs group within the Office of Strategic Communications
  • Work closely with colleagues in the Office of Strategic Communications to ensure that all programming reflects the Institute’s communications priorities
  • Develop and present performance seasons, artistic series, and scientific lecture series and programming that reflects and supports the mission of Caltech
  • Develops and implements programming that stimulate both campus and community interests
  • Generate revenue through various sources such as ticket sales, administrative fees, sponsorships, private and public grants, and individual donors
  • Coordinate with the Ticket Office and Administration Manager and the Campus Events Production Operations Manager on all relevant matters including overall Campus Programs budget
  • Work closely with Campus Event Production on scheduling of Institute venues for events sponsored by other groups
  • Create partnerships with campus and community groups for cross-promotions and program sponsorships
  • Consult with and communicate consistently with others in the campus community who are affected by Campus Programs activities
  • Develop and implement a strategic, comprehensive marketing and advertising plans designed to engage the campus and external communities with the programming created each season. Work closely with colleagues in the Office of Strategic Communications to ensure Campus Programs’ marketing efforts are aligned with the Institute’s overall marketing strategies, including in the areas of publications, media advertising and social media
  • Represent the Institute and its programs to the community, both on and off campus
  • Represent the Institute at various arts and programming conferences and professional venues across the country and internationally, as needed
  • Oversee Campus Programs co-sponsors and partners. This includes arranging meetings with prospective co-sponsors and partners, creating co-sponsorship/partnership packages and overseeing implementation
  • Manage Campus Programs staff including hiring, developing, motivating, and inspiring the staff
  • Create and implement policies and procedures for the Campus Programs unit
  • Other duties as assigned or as the position may require

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  •  6 years of progressively responsible experience operating and managing a successful performing arts center, or comparable program
  • 3 or more years of management experience
  • Demonstrate the ability to practice and adhere to organizational values
  • Demonstrated experience and success in building programming and developing a wide variety of significant education and community outreach programs
  • Experience planning and facilitating large scale events such as Commencements, high-profile visits of nationally and internationally recognized leaders, conferences and meetings; demonstrated experience in marketing and development
  • Strong financial understanding, and management of a comparably-sized budget and staff
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of officials and coworkers
  • Ability to work productively in complex organizations
  • Ability to work well under pressure and lead multiple long and short-term projects simultaneously
  • Ability to present, inform and motivate individuals and groups about the mission and programming objectives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a job-related field
  • Experience working in an academic setting
